My work begins with a question: what would it mean for a Black woman’s body to simply be, without needing to justify, perform, or explain itself?

Radical Softness, the series from which The Acceptance of Tenderness emerges, is my answer, which is an ongoing exploration of body acceptance, humanity, and quiet resistance.

I paint figures cropped to remove the face, not to erase identity but to redirect attention away from conventional beauty standards and toward what the body actually carries: its curves, its folds, its weight, its stillness. Without a face to read or a gaze to meet, the viewer is left with form alone undefended and unedited.

I am interested in vulnerability as a form of power rather than its opposite. So much of what we’re taught about strength, particularly as Black women, is bound up in constant productivity, composure, and performance  the sense that rest must be earned and softness must be justified.

My paintings push back against that. They offer permission instead: to soften, to rest, to take up space without apology. In this sense, Radical Softness is less a series about bodies than a series about refuge a visual space where Black women can set down the performance of perfection and simply exist in their own tenderness. That refuge is the heart of the work, and it’s what I hope viewers carry with them long after they leave the piece.

The Acceptance of Tenderness was featured at Rosefest, and the series has found a home within the creative circles of Ayanda I Am Art Gallery communities equally invested in empowering women artists and reimagining what strength can look like.
