Art, Community And Purpose

A Legacy of Creativity
At the heart of Ayanda I Am Art Gallery is a passion for art and a commitment to community. Founded by Ayanda Gumede-Donnell, a seasoned art curator, consultant, mentor, and artist manager with over 15 years of experience, our gallery is a testament to the transformative power of creativity and collaboration.
Ayanda’s journey in the art world has been nothing short of inspiring. From her early days as an art enthusiast to her current role as a leader in the industry, Ayanda has dedicated her life to championing artists and their work. Her career has included collaborations with renowned institutions such as Kizo Art Gallery, Red Art Gallery, and Lee Art Gallery, as well as managing the administrative aspects of celebrated artist Wakaba Mutheki, often referred to as the “African Van Gogh.”
Through these experiences, Ayanda has gained a deep understanding of the art world and the challenges artists face. She believes that an artist’s success is not solely dependent on their talent but also on the guidance, vision, and support they receive. This philosophy is at the core of Ayanda I Am Art Gallery, where we strive to provide a nurturing environment for artists to thrive.

Support UsAt Ayanda I Am Art Gallery, our mission is twofold.

1. To celebrate and elevate the work of talented African artists.
We are dedicated to providing artists with the platform, resources, and support they need to succeed. Our gallery is a space where their voices are heard, their stories are shared, and their creativity is celebrated. By showcasing their work, we help artists gain the recognition they deserve while also introducing their unique perspectives to a wider audience.
2. To make a meaningful impact in the lives of children with disabilities and special needs.
Through our collaboration with The Art Club Foundation, we use art as a tool for therapy, advocacy, and fundraising. The foundation is a registered NPC that works to create better environments, whether in education, infrastructure, or society, that cater to the unique needs of children with disabilities. By linking artists with our foundation, we raise vital funds and awareness, ensuring that every child has the opportunity to thrive.

Ayanda’s Vision: A Journey of Passion and Purpose

Ayanda’s personal journey is deeply intertwined with the mission and values of the gallery. Her love for art began at a young age, inspired by the vibrant culture and rich heritage of South Africa. Over the years, this passion grew into a career that has spanned more than a decade and a half, during which she has worn many hats: curator, consultant, mentor, artist manager, and advocate.
One of the defining moments in Ayanda’s career was her work with Wakaba Mutheki, a celebrated artist whose talent earned him the dubbed “African Van Gogh.” Managing the administrative aspects of Mutheki’s career gave Ayanda a firsthand understanding of the complexities of the art world. She saw the immense potential of African artists and the barriers they often face, from limited resources to a lack of platforms for showcasing their work. This experience ignited a desire to create a space where artists could not only display their talent but also receive the support and guidance they need to succeed.
Ayanda’s vision for the gallery extends beyond the walls of traditional art spaces. She believes that art has the power to transform lives, not just for the artists who create it but also for the communities it touches. This belief is the driving force behind Ayanda I Am Art Gallery and its mission to use art as a tool for empowerment, advocacy, and change.
Empowering Artists

One of the core pillars of our mission is to empower African artists. We understand that the journey of an artist is not always an easy one. It requires not only talent but also resilience, determination, and access to opportunities. At Ayanda I Am Art Gallery, we are committed to supporting artists at every stage of their careers, from emerging talents to established names.
Our gallery provides a platform for artists to showcase their work, connect with audiences, and build their reputations. But our support goes beyond exhibitions. We also offer mentorship, guidance, and resources to help artists navigate the complexities of the art world. Whether it’s advice on pricing their work, connecting with collectors, or developing their artistic voice, we are here to help artists succeed.
Making a Difference Through The Art Club Foundation
Our commitment to making a difference extends beyond the art world. Through our collaboration with The Art Club Foundation, we use art as a force for good, creating opportunities for children with disabilities and special needs to thrive.
The Art Club Foundation was born out of Ayanda’s personal experiences as a mother to an autistic daughter. Navigating the challenges of finding resources, information, and support for her daughter sparked a desire to create a better world for children with disabilities. The foundation’s mission is to provide art therapy, advocacy, and support for these children, helping them overcome barriers and reach their full potential.
Art therapy is a powerful tool for self-expression, healing, and growth. For children with disabilities, it provides a safe and supportive space to explore their creativity, build confidence, and develop new skills. Through workshops, events, and partnerships with artists, The Art Club Foundation creates opportunities for children to experience the transformative power of art.
Our Vision
Follow Our Mobile Gallery
Art should never be confined to four walls. That’s why we created South Africa’s first mobile walk-in art gallery, a unique initiative that brings art directly to the people. Our mobile art gallery is a one-of-a-kind experience that redefines how art is shared and appreciated. By travelling to markets, schools, and community events, we make creativity accessible to everyone, regardless of their location or circumstances.

Accessibility
Not everyone can visit a traditional gallery. Our mobile gallery ensures that art reaches people where they are, breaking down barriers and creating opportunities for engagement.
Community Engagement
By bringing art to public spaces, we foster a deeper connection between artists and their audiences. This interaction not only benefits the artists but also enriches the lives of those who experience their work.
Innovation
Our mobile gallery is a bold and innovative concept that challenges traditional notions of what a gallery can be. It’s a space where creativity thrives, and new ideas are born.
